
Science Lab: Pig heart dissection
Students in Teacher James’ EP M2 Science class explored the anatomy and function of the human heart through both model study and real pig heart dissection. Students learned to identify and label important heart structures such as the left and right atrium (auricle), ventricles, valves, and major blood vessels. They also studied the circulation of blood through the heart, learning how oxygenated blood moves from the left atrium to the left ventricle before being pumped throughout the body, while deoxygenated blood returns to the right side of the heart and travels to the lungs. By comparing diagrams with an actual pig heart specimen, students observed how heart structures relate to their functions in the circulatory system. This hands-on activity strengthened their understanding of anatomy, circulation, and how the heart works as a pump to transport blood thoughout the body.
