Students in Teacher Darlene’s M1 Summer Science activity explored plant growth and environmental conditions through hands-on investigations using bean seeds and vertical gardening. Students first grew bean sprouts in both light and dark conditions, observing differences in growth, color, and leaf development. They discovered that sprouts grown without light became pale yellow, while those exposed to light developed green leaves due to chlorophyll production during photosynthesis. Students then applied their understanding of plant growth by creating small vertical gardens using a variety of vegetables and leafy greens, including spinach,, bok choy, mustard greens, radishes, beets, and carrots. Through observation, planting, and comparing growth conditions, students learned how light affects plant development and how vertical gardening can be used to grow crops efficiently in limited spaces.
