Science Lab: Molar volume of carbon dioxide

  Did you know that even when a chemical reaction produces a gas that seems to disappear into the air, the atoms are still there? How can we prove that mass is conserved?

Students in the Teacher Cherise’s EP M5 Science class investigated the Law of Conservation of Mass through a hands-on chemical reaction using calcium carbonate and dilute hydrochloric acid. Students measured the volume of carbon dioxide gas released during the reaction and carried out tests to confirm that the gas produced was carbon dioxide. By observing the reaction and measuring the gas produced, students explored how atoms are conserved and how they are rearranged during a chemical reaction. This practical investigation helped students connect the Law of Conservation of Mass to real experimental evidence and understand how quantitative measurements can be used to investigate chemical reactions.
