Science Lab: Diffusion and Temperature

How does temperature affect the rate of diffusion?

Students in Teacher Chris’s M1 Science class investigated diffusion and selective permeability using a plastic bag as a model of a selectively permeable cell membrane. Students tested the diffusion process under cold water, normal-temperature water, and hot water, observing and comparing how quickly the substances moved across the membrane. By recording and comparing their observations at different temperatures, students explored how temperature affects the rate of diffusion. This hands-on activity helped students understand that molecules move from areas of higher concentration to lower concentration and that temperature can affect how quickly diffusion occurs.
