Fruit dissection (Angiosperms) lab

Students in Teacher Nik’s M5 Biology class carried out a Fruit Dissection Lab to study the structure and function of angiosperms. Working with different types of fruits such as mango, banana, papaya, apples and oranges, they carefully observed external features such as sepals, receptacles, and remnants of flowers, before using scalpels to cut open the fruits lengthwise. Students examined the seeds inside and made detailed sketches of cross-sections and seed close-ups to record their findings. Through this activity, they identified the primary function of fruits in protecting and dispersing seeds, while also discussing why angiosperms invest energy in producing sugars and carbohydrates within fruits. By analyzing whether their fruit samples came from monocots or dicots, students deepened their understanding of plant reproduction and the evolutionary importance of fruits in angiosperms.
