"The Egg Drop Experiment"
Planning, Design, Construction, and Testing: Real Scientific Discovery in Action
In a compelling demonstration of real-world scientific thinking, students in the EP-M2 supplementary science class, guided by Teacher Nicholas, embarked on an exciting challenge that brought the full scientific process to life: The Egg Drop Experiment.
This activity wasn’t just about fun—it was about thinking like scientists and engineers, moving through the core phases of experimentation: planning, design, construction, and testing.
Planning
Teams began by brainstorming ideas, analyzing potential materials, and considering real-world physics concepts like impact force, air resistance, and shock absorption. The objective was clear: protect a raw egg from breaking after being dropped from the third floor of the building.
Design
Each team sketched their unique concepts, choosing different design strategies to meet the challenge. Some focused on cushioning using sponges or popcorn, while others engineered parachutes or crumple zones using materials like paper boxes and potato chip cans.
Construction
With their plans in hand, students brought their designs to life. Teamwork was essential as they built prototypes, adjusted materials, and carefully prepared for the big drop—mirroring the iterative process real engineers follow when developing new technology.
Testing
Finally came the moment of truth. One by one, teams released their egg-protecting devices from the third floor. With cheers and suspense in the air, the results were astonishing—not a single egg broke. Every design held strong, demonstrating that the students had successfully applied scientific reasoning, creativity, and collaboration.
This hands-on activity provided a deep, meaningful learning experience. It showcased the power of applying the scientific method in a tangible, high-stakes scenario and proved that discovery is at its best when students plan, test, and learn through doing.
