STEM education is here to stay

at Assumption !

We are pleased to announce that English Program,Assumption College will be implementing STEM education into our supplemental Mathematics and Science curriculums from EP-M1 to EP-M6 on academic year 2017.

STEM is an educational program in which Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics are integrated to help promote lateral thinking and problem solving skills whilst fostering inquiring minds, logical reasoning and promoting collaboration skills amongst students and teachers.

Dr. John Stiles from the Institute for the Promotion of teaching Science and Technology (IPST) has kindly taken an advisor role with us and led extensive and specific STEM training for our staff. We have found that STEM lessons are more appealing to students as they move away from traditional teacher -centered teaching to a more interactive and holistic way of conveying content and helping students learn how to find solutions to complex problems.

Our Science and Mathematics teachers have embraced STEM and the impact has been immediate. ‘I find that implementing STEM activities in my lessons fast tracks my students understanding of the principles of Science and Mathematics’ observed Mr. Wouter Scott, an Assumption EP Science Teacher. ‘I feel STEM extends my students understanding to solve real world and complex engineering problems. My students collaborate well together and enjoy classroom projects that require a hands - on approach’ he remarked.

We value the development and happiness of our students and have found that STEM activities not only give our students a deeper understanding of specific content but also a practical vehicle to display that knowledge to their peers and teachers.
